Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
