A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about secret information in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
