Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
